The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Mamaitaly Charity Foundation (MCF), a Non-governmental Organisation, Ms Shirley Irene Thompson, has called on women to embrace vocational skills training to bridge the unemployment gap.

According to her, unemployment has widened the poverty level of the country, hence the need for the youth, especially women, to adopt skills to meet the demands of the market.

In an interview the CEO of MCF who is also the founder of Mamaitaly Ventures explained that the aim of the foundation was to provide skills to women and help in the educational needs of children.

She indicated that lack of vocational training and practical application of knowledge had contributed to the suffering of many people, adding that “this is where Mamaitaly Charity Foundation comes in to provide skills to the aged, widow, orphan and the deprived in the communities.”

Ms Thompson noted that her organisation had trained over 10,000 people within and outside the country in cosmetology, on how to make liquid soap, body and hand cream, drinks, detergents, antiseptic, bridal fan and bouquet, pastries and other relevant skills to secure their livelihood.

She disclosed that her foundation would better the lives of people and help them in the developmental agenda of the country by assisting needy but brilliant students with funds to help them climb the academic ladder.

Ms Tompson expressed regret that skills acquisition had been relegated to the background when in fact, it had the tendency to develop the economy and urged the needy and deprived to locate her foundation for them to fully develop their skills.

Speaking on the need for people to show keen interest in skills acquisition, Ms Sheila Iris Thompson, the General Secretary and Public Relations Officer of the foundation, observed that it was advisable for a person to learn different skills and not depend on a sole activity for income.

Having diverse skills, she noted, would fit an individual anywhere, stressing that Mamaitaly would afford the citizenry with the needed skills to enable them gain access to any employment of their choice.

Ms Thompson underscored the need for other stakeholders and the government to invest more in skills training to reduce the poverty rate and improve skills development.
