What You Should Know About Ongoing SIM Card Re-registration and Simple Steps To Register





The ministry of Communication and digitization commenced the re-registration of existing sim cards across all networks in Ghana.


The re-registration exercise began today, 1st October 2021, and is expected to last for six months.


Why SIM Card Re-Registration?



According to the Ministry, Sim Card registration will eliminate the fraudulent and criminal activities in the system.


SIM registration, when undertaken correctly as we intend to do, will reduce or eliminate fraudulent and criminal activities, help authorities ascertain the accurate number of valid and accurate SIMs on the networks, enable operators to build better demographics of their customer base, and help them develop products and services to suit the various groupings.

Who can re-register His or Her Sim Card?

The registration is for everyone, existing subscribers can register their SIM cards.  Foreigners who have stayed in Ghana for more than 90 days can use a valid passport for registration.


What do I need to Re-register My Sim Card?

You need to be the existing owner of a sim card or card.


Only the National Identity Card (Ghana Card) issued to an individual shall be used for registration of SIM cards of Citizens, Foreign Residents, and Foreigners staying in Ghana for more than 90 days.

In the case of foreigners staying in Ghana for less than 90 days, a valid passport or other travel document is required


How Many Sim Cards Can I re-register?

Individuals can register a total number of 10 SIM Cards across all networks, and Foreigners will have a limit of 3 SIM Cards across all networks. People should not think that they can hide behind Businesses and register as many SIM Cards as they want, it is traceable and criminal to do that.


All SIM Cards registered to a Business will be linked to a Shareholder or Director of the Business and if a Business SIM Card is found to have been engaged in fraudulent activity, the Shareholder, or Director will be held liable.


What Will happen if I fail to re-register?

. The registration is expected to last six (6) months period and end on 31st March 2022.

.  Any sim which is not registered at the end of this exercise will be blocked.


How Do I Register?

Existing subscribers will register their SIMs via USSD and a sim registration App.


To register, you need to do two stages


1. Linking Sim Card To Ghana Card Via USSD

Dial *404#

. Enter Ghana Card Pin carefully to avoid rejection

. Enter Surname on Ghana Card

. Enter First Name(s) on Ghana Card

. Enter Date of Birth on Ghana Card, removing the hyphens starting the day and month with 0

. Select S£.X (Male or female)

. Confirm Details Carefully

. Submit Details after confirmation


How Do I know My Linking Is Successful?



When successful, you will get a confirmation message with a unique code


What should I do if unsuccessful?


* If Unsuccessful due to wrong details, You have three opportunities to answer security questions


* If Unsuccessful due to verification failure, you will be told to contact the National Identification Authority


Stage Two

You would have to visit your service provider(Agent Customer care) to complete the stage of facial verification and fingerprint
